We are seeking a seasoned editor to join our growing newsroom as an Articles Editor. As part of our in-person digital newsroom, you will collaborate closely with our reporters, freelance writers, visual creators, and fellow editors to produce journalism that informs and delights readers in San Francisco.

We're in search of an adaptable team player who can manage a small team of reporters while also playing a key role in shepherding stories to publication across the newsroom. Our ideal candidate is an accomplished story mechanic who excels at bringing structure to complex narratives and arguments and who possesses a keen ear for language and voice, an eye for distinctive visuals and sharp instincts for connecting with audiences.

Depending on the day, your role will involve editing in-depth investigations, insightful analyses, thought-provoking columns, colorful profiles, trend pieces and cultural criticism. You’ll help ensure everything we publish adheres to our high standards for accuracy, ethics, and style. You will play a key role in fostering the professional growth of our writers, providing constructive feedback and guidance to enhance their story development, writing and reporting skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Line edit and/or top edit high profile news stories, features, enterprise reports, newsletters, etc. from across our staff as needed.
  • Manage 2-4 enterprise and data reporters, serving as their assigning editor and primary line editor.
  • Attend daily and weekly editorial meetings, helping to brainstorm story assignments that create their own news cycles and drive conversation in San Francisco.
  • Uphold and enforce editorial standards, including fact-checking, adherence to journalism ethics, and adherence to style guidelines.
  • Mentor and develop reporters through constructive feedback and coaching.
  • Stay abreast of major news stories and trends, adjusting coverage plans as needed.
  • Collaborate closely with fellow editors to coordinate editorial initiatives and coverage plans.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of experience as an editor or in a similar editorial role.
  • Thorough understanding of editorial processes, fact-checking procedures, and journalism ethics.
  • Familiarity with media law and editorial style guidelines.
  • Focus on fostering staff development.
  • Excellent news judgment and ability to prioritize stories effectively.
  • Experience with digital content management systems and social media platforms.
  • Knowledge of data journalism and basic data visualization techniques.
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field preferred.
  • Please note that this is an in-person role and may require occasional evening or weekend work.
