The San Francisco Standard is seeking a QA Engineer to help ensure the quality and reliability of our modern web applications. The ideal candidate will combine technical expertise with a methodical approach to quality assurance and testing automation.
We're looking for a QA Engineer with a proven track record who takes pride in crafting robust testing frameworks and ensuring exceptional product quality. In this role, you'll architect automated testing systems, create comprehensive test plans, and strategically perform manual validation to ensure product quality. Reporting to the Director of Product, you will work with cross-functional teams to implement and maintain testing infrastructure for a high-profile, large-scale content platform with a devoted digital audience.
As a digital-native news publisher, maintaining high quality standards across our tech stack is essential to fostering trust and loyalty in our growing audience. We are undertaking an ambitious systems modernization project this year, and we need a dedicated testing professional to ensure reliability and performance in all phases of the development process.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain comprehensive automated testing strategies using Jest and Cypress
- Develop and execute end-to-end test scenarios that simulate real user interactions with our CMS and public-facing applications
- Write and maintain unit tests with Jest, including snapshot testing for React components
- Create and maintain a rigorous smoke test pipeline which should catch production artifacts
- Implement integration tests to ensure seamless functionality across different system components
- Create and maintain testing documentation, including test plans, test cases, and testing standards
- Collaborate with developers to ensure proper test coverage for new features and bug fixes
- Set up and maintain continuous integration pipelines for automated testing
- Strategically conduct manual QA validation testing when appropriate
- Monitor and analyze test results to identify patterns and potential issues
- Participate in code reviews with a focus on testability and quality
- Work with the team to establish quality metrics and testing best practices
- Assist in performance testing and optimization
- Investigate and document bug reports, ensuring proper reproduction steps
- Maintain testing environments and test data
Qualifications:
- Minimum 3 years of professional experience with:
- Jest testing framework and snapshot testing
- Cypress for end-to-end testing
- JavaScript/TypeScript testing practices
- React component testing
- Proven experience in:
- Writing and maintaining large-scale test suites
- Setting up and managing continuous integration/deployment pipelines
- Working with Git version control
- Test automation in an Agile environment
- Strong understanding of:
- Modern web technologies (React, Next.js, TypeScript)
- Testing principles and methodologies
- Web application architecture
- Performance testing concepts
- RESTful APIs and GraphQL testing
- Testing best practices and patterns
- A mastery of these soft skills:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Excellent attention to detail
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English

Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years of QA automation experience in production environments
- Experience with performance testing tools and methodologies

- Knowledge of security testing principles

- Background in news media or content management systems
- Experience with Docker and containerized testing environments
For this role, we're considering candidates who live in continental Europe and are willing to work hours that partially overlap with our product team based in the western United States, roughly between 13:00 and 21:00 GMT.
This role is for a self-employed contractor working remotely. Compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate. Monetary compensation will be paid in US dollars, with range of compensation of $2500-3500 weekly.
